In answer to your communication of the
7th of January 1864, requesting me to furnish
for the information of the Adjt. Generals
office a succinct report of my military history
since the 4th of March 1861. I have the honor
to submit the following statement.
It is now impossible for me to furnish you the
precise dates of my assuming the several commands
devolved upon me since the 4th of March 1861, owing to
the loss of my books & papers in the retreat from Winches-
ter, Va, on June 1863 but I believe, the following dates
will be found sufficiently accurate for the purpose desired.
the same remark applies with equal force & for the
same reason to the time when any given officer became a
member of my personal staff. Having promised this
much with reference to dates, I proceed to facts.
Seeing from the persistent madness of the South
that war was inevitable & then a sudden emergency
would arise for a large military force by the government
to put down rebellion, I on the 7th of February 1861
issued a call for a company of volunteers at
Rensselaer Ind. And upon call for three months volunteers in Apl..
the service of my Company & was accepted
& reached Indianapolis, the place of rendezvous on the
18th of Apl. 1861 & was mustered into service of the United States with my
Company as Captain on the 23rd of Apl. 1861, to serve for the
term of three months. I continued in command of this
