My Dear Mary
I have today recd. three months
pay & enclosed send you $700.00 in two drafts on N. Y.
one for $500.00 & the other for $200.00. I think that
Thompson will give you more than the face of these
drafts, probably one per cent, that is one dollar
for every $100.00, $707.00 in all. They may be paying
more than this. You can ask him what he is
paying for drafts on N. Y. Such drafts sometimes
sell there as high as two per cent. He will at
least be glad to get the drafts of you at par.
You will remember that I sent you a check
on the State Bank at Indianapolis last year
for $355.00 which had been deposited there by
Moody in my favor for money which he & the
9th Ind. Vols. loaned me. I had a letter recently
from Moody informing me that $100.00 of
that sum was for a set of musical instrum-
ents, which I had become responsible for, &
the band of the 9th. The musical instruments
were got of a man in Monticello who has since
died, & I recd. a letter from a Mr. James T.
Staley who resides there, a few days ago, stating
that the widow was needing the money badly.
