My Dear Mary
I telegraphed you
of my safety yesterday from Harpers
Ferry. The President had put Brig. Genl.
Tyler in command of H. Ferry before I
arrived there, & Gen. Schenck could not
order me in command there & being superior
in rank to Tyler, he (Schenck) did not
wish to leave me at the Ferry, subject to
Tyler’s orders so I was ordered to turn
over my command to Tyler & report to
Gen. Schenck at this place. I left the
Ferry at 12 a.m. yesterday with my
staff come on horseback to Frederick
City, (The command running to the Ferry)
& came on by special trains here.
Gen. Schenck is anxious for me to return
to the Ferry & assist in its defuse &
I have a special train ready &
will start in a few minutes.
I have only time to say that I
have again passed through much
terrible fighting three days, Saturday,
Sunday, & Monday. I have lost almost
