This is the letter which was mislaid June 23.
Rensselaer, Ind. June 18th, 1863
My Dear Robert,
I feel that I ought
to have written to you long ago
but I have been house cleaning
and so unsettled and worn
out, that I have put it off from
day to day, and I fear now
that this letter will not reach
you very soon on account of
the rebel raid north.
I have read of your retreat to
Harpers Ferry, and regret that
your force was so much reduced
that you could not hold that
traitor town. I am truly thank-
ful that your life has been spared
through it all, and regret the
loss of so many of your brave
boys. I am anxious to learn the
particulars, did many of the
