My Dear Mary, 


		I have received Vals 
big letter of the 17th with your endors= 
ment on it and also Ellas letter of the same  
date. Also yours of the 13th. I am much 
pleased to see how Val is improving. 
Tell him to keep on trying, he will be  
a fine writer some day-Ella is begi= 
nning to write a very good letter. She is 
improving very fast. 


I cannot recollect anything about 
the amt. of that remittance to you in 
March 1863., but I have no doubt 
from what you say that Tatman stole 
the most of it. If you will look 
over my diary for 1863 you will 
find something of it in the month of  
Jan. or Feb.-I generally mentioned the 
payments I recd. & the remittance I 
made to you. I have no doubt but
