Indiana- May 12th, 1864
President Lincoln,
You stand at the head of our
great armies. Your word makes and unmakes
officers & gives and takes away positions and
commands. The last great campaign of this
Great Rebellion is in full operation. Indiana
has in this campaign over 100,000 men in the
field, but not our Major General. She has but three
Maj. Genl. in service – Wallace is taking care
of Baltimore – Reynolds of New Orleans, & Milroy
has been shelved for near eleven months, without
any known cause, - chaffing like a caged lion to be on
duty. Your own state Illinois has ten Maj. Genl. &
one Lt. Genl. all in the field & in high comd.
We Hoosiers think you are not giving Indiana a
fair shake. Your friends are pained at this, and
your enemies rejoice at it & will make a handle of
it.
With great respect
your friend
