Gentlemen
Your kind invitation of
the 12th Ult. to be present at
the celebratio of the 4th of July at the
Tippecanoe Battle ground is cited. It would
afford me great pleasure to accept this
invitation, but in consequence of important
changed in the different commands in this
Department it would not be propper for
me to be absent from my command. Tho I
cannot be personally present I will be present in feeling to participate with
my fellow citizens of my native state in the
celebration of the glorious anniversary of
freedom and to rejoice with them in the
return of permanent peace. The 2nd birth
of our nation. The reestablishment of our
blood cemented Union on a foundation as
lasting as man and the final demonstr-
ation of the great problem that man
under right conditions is capable of self
government & that the great principles
