directs me to say that Mrs Dolly Battle, with her
sister-in-law, Miss Sallie Battle, were arrested at
Wartrace Tenn. by his order, house days ago, for the
reason that they had come to that place 60 miles
on horseback to re-coffin and bury the body of a
notorious robber, bushwhacker, guerilla, thief and
murderer named Van Houten alias Trammel, who
was killed at that place on the night of the 21th ult.
while engaged with a band of some ten other guerillas
thieves and robbers in robbing the telegraph office &
sutler store at that place. This thief when killed
had the telegraph instrument under his arm, and
there was found ire his person the photographes of
this Mrs. Battle and her sister-in-law, together with
a small pocket edition of Shakespeare, with the
inscription “Presented to Henry Traummel by his friend
Dolly Battle.” Also a gold watch which she says
was her property loaned to him, showing the closest
friendship and intimacy between them.
The reputation of their whole family is notoriously
bad for treason and being the allies and harborers
of bushwackers. This Mrs Dolly Battle & her
