Head Quarters Milroy Division
Winchester, Va. Jan. 30, 1863
I David W. Barton of the City of Winchester,
state of East Virginia, having this day
received from Brig. Genl. R. H. Milroy in command
of United States forces at & in vicinity of said city
of Winchester, a general pass through the
guards & pickets of said forces, to go to & return
from my farm on the Valley Turnpike, do hereby
in consideration of said privilege solemnly
promise & give my parcel of honor that I will
not carry out of said city any article, letter, or
communication of any kind for any person in arms
against, or hostile to the Government of the United States.
That I will neither directly nor indirectly give any
aid, comfort, or information to the enemies of the Government
of the United States, or do any act to the injury or against
the interest of the army or Government of the United
States.
