Photograph, Milroy and officers, Lookout Mtn., Tenn., no date, no studio
From a letter to Mary:
We road around the day (the 13th inst) & went out on the projecting point of vast height from which 5 states can be seen Ala. Ga. Tenn. Va. & N.C. There is a photograph gallery here & we all got ambrotypes in a group. I send you mine -- you will easily recognize me with the group of officers around me -- 3 Cols, 1 Maj, 2 Capts & 1 Lt. Immediately behind me holding a case is Col. Krzyzanowski - on his right is my Qr. Mr. Lt. Pelham - standing down on the Side of the cliff to my left on a narrow crag is Dr. McClellan
My Medical Director (the Major) behind Dr. McClellan & to the left of Col Krzyzanowski is Col. W.C. Wilson of the 135th Ind. On Col. Wilson's left is Capt Zeb Baird & on Capt. Bairds left is Capt B.K. Elliott and laying down in front of Capts. Elliott & Baird is Col. Shannon of the 138th Ind. Dr. McMillan is standing in a dangerous place on the side of the precipice on which we are grouped.
The white that you see by & over the point of the precipice is the Tennessee River away off & down in the distance & between us and the river is the scene of west of Hookers battle in the couds.
The town of Chattanooga is in the scene but cannot be discerned. It is so far below us that the largest houses can barely be discerned by the naked eye & the town looks like an old brick yard. We are all looking at the splendid distance scenery. I am looking at the sight & remains of Rossville 6 miles off at the foot of Mission Ridge - where the old Cherokee John Ross used to live.
