Dear Friend
Perhaps you have forgotten me, if so I
assure
you I will never for get you, and the brave
heroic deeds of Western Virginia. I am sorry
to know you have fallen into difficulties, and
no doubt unjustly so, because I am sure, no
Genl. in the field has truer patriotism
and more real courage than yourself.
I was pained to the heart, when I heard
of your arrest. I met with Col. Ball of 122 Ohio
Reg. who, it seems was with you at Winchester, VA.
also Col. Keifer, who is now commanding this
Brig. both agree in saying that no one could
have done better under the circumstances than you did,
and your defeat was not your fault, and they
with myself, are anxious to have the honor
to be under your command once more.
I would judge, from all the facts I can
gather in the case, your orders were not all
