My Dear Mary. I rec’d. an order on Friday
last to turn over my command at Bloody Run
to Col. Pierce of the 12th Pa. Cav. & to report to
Gen. Schenck at this place without delay, which
I did, arriving here on Saturday morning with
my Aids. Maj. McGee, Capt. Powell, Capt
Palmer & Lt. McCracken. Decoid having come
on here some days before. I was ordered to
leave Cravens, McDonald & Demott
with Col. Pierce. I had no idea why
I was ordered here till my arrival, when Gen.
Schenck informed me that he had rec’d a peremptory
on the 20th from the tyranical prejudiced brute
Hallock to place me in arrest. Gen. Schenck
& Maj. Gen. Couch (in whose department I then was) both remonstrated
