“Camp Milroy”
Near Sharpsburg, MD. July 29, 1863
My dear General,
Please find en-
closed a copy of the paper sent on to
the President – through Sec. Usher, on the
27th inst. We concluded that this
would be proper course; that you
should know nothing of the matter until
it had been presented to the President.
Now there would be no kind of
impropriety in your looking after the matter
through Secretary Usher, or some other
friend, in order to make sure of its ac-
ceptance & pirusal by the President.
A letter accompanied the petition to
Sec. Usher, signed “John B. Clunk, Col. 116th
Ohio Vol. Infty., Com’dg Infty. Brigade & others,” ur-
ging the secretary, as your friend, to present
the petition in person, and urge the con-
summation of our wishes. This paper
is officially signed by one hundred & two officers, all
(written along left margin)
The Petition as you will see, is dated 23rd – I was arrested on the 24th with
a view to prevent me from signing officially as Comd’g Regt. – I signed on the 23rd so
that one object of McR, in arresting me is defeated.
He has tried in every
possible way to precure
a copy of the petition – but
there is none to be had.
Handwritten; 1 sheet, double folded, 4 sides of writing; white stationery with light blue lines
