It is with extreme regret
that we learn that a plan is at work
to place you in a false light with those
who are unacquainted with the course
you have pursued while in command
of this portion of Tennessee. You may rest
assured, General, that we who claim to be
law abiding and union loving citizens of
Tennessee, will be ever grateful to you for
the upright and noble course you have pur-
sued with so much vigilance in ridding us
of that worst of scourges Guerrillas and
bushwhackers. We know that you have
beautifully shown in your excellent policy
here the most eminent qualities of the warrier
the stateman and the christian, and although
many of your well deserved and hard
earned laurels have been placed upon
others brows, you have our most cordial
assurance that with us, aside from our late
lamented president, you are esteemed as our
bravest defender, our best friend, and
our noblest patriot. Although efforts
may be made by unscrupulous parties from
this State to detract from your well
earned glory, and although unfair
