South Bend, Ind
July 21, 1863
Dear General,
Your letter of June 28th (The
first line I had from you since I
obtained your promotion as Maj. General)
directed to me here, was remailed to me
at Newport, R. I. & reached there when
my dear suffering wife was on her
death bed. She died week before last
& was buried here last week; & I
have only just read the accumulation
of letters I have had no heart to
look at before. Be assured that
in the midst of my own afflictions, I
sympathize with you deeply; & have an
abiding confidence that you will
vindicate yourself thoroughly.
Your afflicted friend,
Schuyler Colfax
