Martinsburg, VA
Oct. 16th 1863
Sir:
I hope you will not consider
me presumptuous in thus addressing you, to request
a favor at your hands. I would respectfully
ask a position on your staff, or if that be im-
possible, that you tell me, if in your power, where
such a position can be obtained with good reco-
mmendations. I would much prefer, if my own
personal inclinations were consulted, going with
you to any one else, when you are assigned to ac-
tive duty. It has been the good fortune of the
12th West VA. Infty., the greater part of the time we
have been in service, to be under you command,

and a man, and hence my preferences to be with
you. I am willing to do my duty, to the best of my
ability, wherever I may be called. I did it, as an
enlisted man for five (5) months. I have tried to do it
as a Commissioned Officer for nine (9) months, and
I am willing to continue to do it, until this rebellion
is crushed, and the last vestige of it wiped from
the face of our land. There are some positions however
that an individual prefers to others, and something
