Head Quarters 178th O.V.I.

Lieutenant:
I have the honor to report the
part taken by this regt. in the engagement of
the 7th inst.
In the formation of the line for the
attack the 178th was placed on the left of the 2nd
line: in this manner the line advanced until the
front line became hastily engaged. As order of Genl.
Milroy, I moved to the left and front, for the
purpose of attacking the enemy on his flank.
This attack was successful and the enemy was
mounted. The regt. was lulled in a piece of woods
to the left of the Wilkinsons Pike, a considerable distance
from the main line, and shortly after joined the
