Plan of a reconnaissance to destroy the com-
munication between the East and the West by
the southern Railroad running from Richmond
to Memphis. The column of General Milroy,
supposing it to leave New Creek on Dec. 1st,
will arrive at Franklin on the 3d.

This column will carry provisions for 10 days – 4
being in the haversack and 6 in wagons.
The 3 regiments of Infantry, the half battery
of Artillery and the Company of Cavalry left
at Beverly will leave that place on the 3d
inst, arrive at Huntersville the 5th and
will there await orders. These troops will also
be provided with 10 days provisions. The move-
ment to be so combined so as to invest
Warm Springs and bring about the capture
of the Garrison without a fight.
Provisions for 10 days for the whole Division
will leave Beverly with the troops posted at
that place, and will descend, protected
by that detachment, along the road follow-
ing the Green Brier.
On the 7th inst. the Division will re-
place from the train thus arrived, the
provisions used up en route.
On the 8th the Division will leave Warm
Springs for .Lewigsburg, taking the route
which passes Hot Springs, Hughes Creek and
Anthonys Creek, so as to arrive at 10 P.M.
at Green Brier River, take the bridge at
that point, while another detachment
