Major Gen. R. H. Milroy
Dear General,
When by the hands of those
(whose duty it seems to be to deprive the widow and
children of that for which she toiled night and day
by the sweat of her brow) we were handed over to
your care. --- When the fell destroyer claimed us
as his victim and we were stripped of all our
earthly possessions, and left us instead of our
bright anticipations, (which were comfort, pleasure,
& luxury) penniless and poverty stricken when
we were cast forth upon this world, to be beggars
or die for want of sustenance. --- The “Almighty
God” saw fit to rescue us from the grasp of the
fiery ordeal through which we would have had to
pass, and he made you the instrument to full fill
his wishes --- and you have done the “Lords will
to Him” have we already offered our prayers and
thanks --- and now to you we turn. --- What
words can we employ, what language can we
bring to bear, to give additional force to our deep
seated feelings of gratitude toward you, for
this act of kindness on your part.
Words & language both are inadequate to exhibit to you
the feelings of our hearts, therefore dear General
accept the humble, “we thank you,” with the
Handwritten; 1 sheet, double folded, 2 sides of writing; white stationery with light blue lines
