Pardon this intrusion
but I could not permit this, the first
anniversary of your glorious Proclamation
of Freedom to pass without in behalf of
My Country of future generations & of the
World most sincerely thanking you for
that Heaven inspired Instrument. Permit
me to relate an occurrence that took place
with me one year ago today - I was on that
day marching my division to ill fated
Winchester – It was a beautiful day. The sun
rose clear & brilliant as we arrived at the
summit of North Mountain giving us a
splendid view of the Valley of the Shenandoah
& of the Blue Ridge beyond – God seemed to smile on the World.
