On the 10th inst I wrote
a letter to you, which was returned with an
endorsement by Maj J. V Cravens, in which occurs
the following language.
X X X “and that this dead thief was “a
very dear friend” of theirs” – “The Maj Genl Comdg
cannot well see how a U. S. Officer can get his
own conduct to become partners with bushwackers
in the affections or friendship of such women”
As a “U. S. Officer” I ask an explanation of what
is herein implied.
