My Dear General,
Your favor of the fourth was duly
received by me yesterday. Need I assure you that
your frank friendly letter to myself was a welcome
assurance that I still preserved a sunny nook in
your memory, for I confess that, I was for a long time
apprehensive that your recollections of me were few and
faint, and that, as our paths in life ran in different
directions, unconnected by even a casual correspondence,
our former links of cordiality were corroded and severed by
wordly wisdom and studied indifference.
I have never forgotten you as a warm hearted impulsive
generous friend. Often in my checkered existence amid the
wild and beauteous scenery of southern climes, has my
spirit sped it’s flight over land and sea, to the green
hills where we strayed in bye gone years and mused
with delight on our happy relations as a military brotherhood.
Since we met at the same table, drilled together on the
village green, and hearkened to the sage precepts of that
venerated philanthropist who has long since been
relieved from his toilsome service and is now mustered
in the select corps of our Great Commander what
changes have taken place socially and politically; how
many of the old cadets would now be absent from roll
call, how many have freely laid down their lives as martyrs
to their unswerving faith as freemen and supporters of the
