My dear Milroy 

                      Thanks for your letter of 6th 
received last week & still more for those 
sick soldiers you sent home.  You can’t 
imagine how a change of climate restored their 
health.  They could whip twice their weight in 
Copperheads when they arrived. & the visit was timely 
for the polls 
You can scarcely realize how bitter & desperate 
has the fight the enemy made against me. 
They concentrated their fire on this District 
imported speakers from Ky, Ill & Ohio, spent 
money like water, held hosp meetings ( they had them 
at 10 of my 14 Co. seats the last 2 days before 
election, & were hopeful & sanguine to the last. 
I spoke every day & twice a day, for 2 months. 
And the maj is magnificent, 1610 to 1700. 
Am just starting to speak in 12 Districts in Mich, 
Ill, Ms & Iowa till Prsd election, though 
worn out.   In great haste, Ever & truly
