General,
In obedience to your
order of this 18th inst I beg leave to report that the
amount of property in the possession of Mr. Churchman
to which Mrs. Rutledge claims title in her own right
is very inconsiderable, and its secrecy did not constitute
the object of her application to Gen. Thomas’ headquarters.
What she desired was an order to prevent him from
conveying away his own property until she could
have an opportunity to establish her claim before the
Civil authorities, so that she might then secure it.
Her real claim uses a money demand, for property
sold by him as her agent under instructions to sell
for cash only, and for rents collected by him from
estate which she claims to own, which rents were to be
paid in kind, and sold by him for money.
The personal property of hers, which was sold by him
exclusive of that which he received for rents, she acquired
before, or at about the time of her marriage.
The real estate out of which the rents arose was conveyed
