His Excellency
Abraham Lincoln
President of the U.S.
Sir,
I hereby
respectfully tender my resignationas Maj General
of Volunteers, and ask that its acceptance
may be immediateand unconditional, for
the following reasons to-wit:
1st Ten months ago I was suspended
from command in front of the enemy
and placed in arrest like a criminal.
No Justification for this humiliation
and wrong could be ascertained by the closest
scrutiny of a Court of Inquiry as was decided
by your Excellency, but no reparation has
been afforded and the wrong then done me, has
been continued and aggravated by keeping me
in exile from duty.
2nd While retaining my commission and
restrained by official position I can
publish nothing in defence of my
conduct, and against the imputation and suspicion
cast on me of ignominious arrest.
