My Dear Mary,
Mr James not having
arrived with Jasper on Monday as I had
expected I made arrangements for his
transportation to this place with the horse and
concluded to come on on Tuesday and await
him here. I arrived safely on Tuesday
Evening at 5 ½ P.M. and stoped at this
Hotel, where everything is poorly attended to
except charging and that is done equal to N.Y.
or Washington City. $3.50 per day. I have
been called on by a number of acquaintances
Maj. Genl. Carl Schurtz, Brig Gen John F
Miller who was the Col of the 28th Ind Regt
raised at LaPorte at the same time
I raised mine there. Maj Genl Rousseau
who commands this Dist. who was a Capt
with me in Mexico and a member of the Ind.
Constitutional Convention. Col. Baratte of
the 1st Regt Ohio Artillery—who was in comd
of the Artillery with us in the 3 month service.
Maj Hannun who was with me in Mexico as
a private & a Capt in my 3 months Regt and
is now a Maj of a Cav. Regt base. He is
from Delphi.
