My Dear Mary,
I arrived here this morning
between 7 & 8 oclock, A broke down Train
off the track, throwed me behind time some 6
or 7 hours in getting here. - I did not succeed
in getting a car for Jasper & had to leave him
at Bradford with Mr. James to bring him on
in the freight train - which would not get
further than Lafayette last night & will lay
over there today & come on here tomorrow. - I gave him
money to pay expenses etc. - I had to come through
Indianapolis as that was the only way I could come.
I had to lay over there three hours & seen many
friends. Josh Garnett among them. He is trying for
a chaplincy in the 100 days service - nearly all the
Hanover students have volunteered & he wants to go
to with them. - I saw Johny Black he is almost
crazy to go but was afraid he could not get in on
account of his eyes. - I was surprised to learn that
Wm Blake has turned out to be a very dissolute
& immoral man, & James (Jr) is becoming steady.
I meet acquaintances at almost every stop. I
find many Ind. officers here with whom I am
well acquainted -- among others Maj. Terrell a Pay Master
