Milroy was rec’d & he directs me to reply as
follows. On the 25th of Dec. 1862
Gen. Cluserets Brigade of Milroys
Division took possession of Winche-
ster & ordered his ranking surgeon
to take charge of the Taylor
Hotel for a hospital. One week
afterwards Gen. Milroy arrived
with other Brigades of his Division
& soon after directed his Med.
Director
Surgeon Merkens to take charge
of Taylor Hotel with other hosp-
itals in the lawn with all the
property in them fit for hospital
purposes & to see that what property
was not needed for hospital purposes
was (stricken: turned over to) properly cared for.
Some time afterwards the owner
