Camp near New Baltimore

Dear General,
After twelve days of marching
and suffering, I sit down to write you
a line in acknowledgment of your
kind letter. I thank you for it, and
for the good opinions expressed in it.
I should willingly accept the
Colonel of a colored regiment if
I could get it in some brigade where
I should not be outranked by every
upstart in it. I have had the
command of a regiment of regulars
in all for about 8 months, and do
not feel that I ought to be placed
below everybody again, in any new
organization into which I may go.
I have not given life to this cause
than others, that I should be kept
