I got back to this place
on Wednesday last, having been down to
the front nearly to the center of the State
of Georgia—to report to Genls. Thomas and
Sherman. I left this place on last
Friday a week (the 20th) for the front
taking Mr. James with me. Most of
the country through which I passed
was splended, that is the land is rich,
rolling-well watered –well timbered
.—but generly rather poorly improved.
Nature has lavished her choicest
gifts upon this State in everything that
conduces to the wealth and greatness of
a country. The climate is equal to that
of Italy, and is beautiful scenery, health
salubrity, soil, timber minerals, stone
marble, water, etc and is not surpassed
by any country on Earth. But in this
favored and beautiful portion of Gods Crea
tion “Man alone is vile” He has most
Cruely apprised his fellow man. The
