His Excellency
Andrew Johnson
President of the U.S.
Dear sir,
I have been
planted at this post one year in comparative
inactive duty which has been most irksome
to me. You would do me a very great
favor by giving me some active duty to perform
before returning to private life (which I suppose
I will have to do soon, not being a West Pointer)
If my request to be sent to the border of Mexico
(made a (stricken: few) some days ago) cannot be granted, I would
be most pleased to be appointed Military Governor
of Alabama. I think I understand your policy
of mercy to the misguided masses & justice to the
leaders who misled them. I feel very sure that if
I could be sent there with a propper military force
& some discretionary power (stricken: that ) I could bring
Alabama in all right with the machinery of civil
Govt. in good working order – I would prefer
remaining in the Service for a time at least. Please try me
