I respectfully ask of the Maj. Genl.
commanding The Department of the Cumberland,
to be transferred to the Command of the division
recently commanded by Brig. Genl. Hovy who I
learn has resigned for the following reasons.
1st My present command of 8000 men is scattered
along at proper points between Nashville & Look out
Creek, 154 miles & is disposed under there
experienced & competent Brigade Commanders to wit. Brig genl.
Paine – Brig. Genl. Van Cleve, & Col. Krizynowskie,
who are each perfectly familiar with the duties
required of them & well acquainted with country
along the line of their respective commands, and
have the defence of the R.R. as with a manager as
the forces under their commands will admit of, so
that my supervision is but little needed, &
my duties could be discharged by an
Inspector General
