Pardon this intrusion, and hear my
reason for it. Knowing amid the mighty
events though which you are passing, that
you would loose sight of me. I desire respectf
ully to remind you that I have not seen the
flash or heard the sound of a hostile gun
for near fourteen months. For more than two
years prior to that time, I have been almost
constantly in front, and that sight and sound
was my pleasure and my music, but without
fault of mine, I have been exiled from the
front and condemned to inglorious rear
service- General, have I not done my
under the circumstances of my exile from active field duty this
share of such service? It is a most
miserable service to me while so much
glorious fighting is going on in front,
I am not needed here. Can you not ,
among the many vacancies occasioned by
