My dear Robert, 

I returned home from Lafayette and Delphi evening before last by the way of Logansport.  I found the children all well and got along very well in my absence.  I got my teet fixt on a new plate for half price which is 20 dollars, whilst I was there orders came from Morton to raise troops and send them down as fast as possible to repel Morgan which produced considerable excitement and stir in the city.  Dr. Moore was going and men that had not though of of going to war were ready to 



turn out. Whilst I was  

traiding in Wards store  I  

was told about that lying  

piece in the New York Tribune 

about you and I, which was 

copyed in the Lafayette Journal 

I told Ward that I had seen the  

charges before, and that they were 

false, and could prove to the 

Editors of the Journal by letters from 

my Husband which I had with  

me, that he did not act a cowardly 

and base part  in the Winchester 

affair, he said that he would 

go with me to the Journal office 

and introduce me. I went with  

him and requested to see the  

piece, he gave me a paper,  when I  

read it the remarks of the  

Tribune Editor made my blood  

almost boil, I gave the Editor  

of Journal your letters he said that 

he would publish a defence, I
