Will you excuse the liberty I take in address-
ing you, for having been an active participant
in the defence and evacuation of Winchester, VA.
and having had opportunity to observe, at least
one part of the field of operations, with particularly
I have thought my observation might serve you
and the cause of Justice, by directing your at-
tention to it. Had the right of the line, on Mon-
day morning, duly seconded your gallant exertions
at the left and centre, an entirely different
and more favorable results might have followed, and
to this fact, I infer, is attributable , in a large
degree, the disasterous capture of the mass of
those who fell into the hands of the enemy.
Trusting, General, that night may triumph
and that you may be justified sustained.
