                      Pardon my intrusion & 
please hear me.  I was recently induced 
to send to you my resignation as Maj. 
Gnl. For the following reasons.  Stonman 
(who was only himself my equal in 
rank) grossly insulted me by direc- 
ting me to report  to Brig. Gnl. Johnson 
who he had placed over me in 
Rousseaus place.  I at once came 
to Nashville & reported to Whipple who (I think) 
without any authority (stricken: I think)  ordered 
me (stricken: to) by (stricken: directions) instructions rec’d 
from the Lieut. Gnl. Comdg. Armies of 
the U. S. to  “proceed to my residence 
at Rensselaer Ind. reporting by letter 
(stricken: to) on arrival to the Adjt. Gnl. USA 
for muster out of service”  To avoid 
being (stricken: kick) thus kicked out of the 
service by West Pointers I sent 
to you my resignation.  I have 
since seen a general order generals to
