I most respectfully and
earnestly ask to be assigned to active
field duty in Va. if possible, but
any where that may suit your
pleasure for the following reasons
I was educated a soldier and earned my present rank from
that of Capt. and have had no fair
opportunity to prove that I am
worthy of the promotion.
I was deprived of command in Va.
in a manner – at a time and under
circumstances most painful to my
feelings and of the most cruel injustice.
My comd. here ( a scattered station
R.R. guard) is of less dignity and
importance than that of many
Brigadiers and Cols. in the service and will
afford me no opportunity of wiping
out the burning stigma of my arrest.
All the Generals under or with whom I
have served and all that know any thing
