Maj Genl. R. H. Milroy
My dear friend
Yours of Sept. 13th
was Thankfully received and eagerly purused.
I have been absent in Baltimore looking after
the wounded men of my company – also have
just returned from a trip up the Shenandoah
Valley as far a Cedar Creek. This must
answer as an apology for not answering
your kind letter sooner.
I saw many of your good Loyal friends
at Winchester – all of whom wished to be
remembered to General Milroy - I tell you
Genl. you have sincere friends in the Valley,
who pray for your health prosperity and
and return with sufficient force to hold
the valley - you will remember old Josey
Lupton the Quaker who lives on ApplePie Ridge
It did seem as though the old man would go
up with joy when he saw me, and eagerly
enquired after Genl. Milroy. I told him you
were well and in command at Tullahoma
also that I had a letter in my pocket
directly from you – He made me take it
out and said he recognized your hand writing
