In obedience to your Orders, I
proceeded on the afternoon of the 4th inst. to the relief of
the Blockhouse at Overalls Creek, Four and one half
miles North of this Place on the Nashville s Chattanooga
Rail Road, which was besieged by a considerable
Rebel force with artillery. I took with me by your
Order the 8th Reg. Minn.. I. V. Infy. & Reg. Ill.
I. V. Infy. 174 Reg. O. V. Infy. and a section of the
13 N.Y. Artillery under Lieut. McFurrin. I proceeded
on the Nashville Pike to Overalls Creek, where I
found the 13th Ind. Cavalry (Col. Johnson) who
preceded me some hours, engaged in skirmishing with
the Enemy’s sharp-shooters, who were deployed across
the Creek. I threw Lieut. McFurrin with his section
of Artillery forward to the bluff of the Creek, who
engaged the Enemy’s Battery in gallant style, which
was pivoted on an eminence about 900 yards
distant, on the opposite side of the Creek, between
the Rail Road and the Nashville Pike.
I at once deployed the 61st Ill. as skirmishers, and
sent up the 8th Minn. to the Blockhouse, at the Rail Road
crossing about half a mile below the Pike, with the
orders to cross there if practicable, and flank the Rebel
Battery on the right. I then advanced the skirmi-
shers across the Creek, most of them crossing the
