I have just returned
from Church, and sent to the Courthouse
a basket of rations for our soldiers who are
on duty today. Our town is under Martial
law, and quite an excitement pervades
the town and County, the butternuts
are threatening to come in and make
sad havock here, if a traitor is not given
up whom our Provo Martial arrested last
evening. The butternuts had a convention
in Wright’s grove yesterday and
Dick Dod of Indianapolis was the great
speaker of the occassion, he is a pettifogger
and brother to the Ex-Auditor of State
whome you no doubt know very well,
he was invited here by G. W. Spittler. This
Convention was in prospect some Considerable
time before Spittler’s death, and it appears
that he had written to a good many
different speakers to attend, but none came
except this Dod, and he renderd himself
so odious by his treasonable remarks that
Cicero (Our Provo) Arrested him in the evening
