I received your letter of Jan 15th,
postmarked 2nd, last week, & have been trying ever
since to get a personal interview with Gen McCllelan
but in vain, till this morning I got an interview with
Secy. Stanton & found him there. You know we cannot
see the Secy of War now, except Saturdays, & then in
public with a crowd of members around, & the briefest
possible interviews. But he had ordered me to be admitted
this week wherever I chose, & hence I put in for you.
I have already telegraphed you the result. I read
parts of your letter to them both. Other parts could not
have done to read, though I feel the same heart sickness
you express, & my last hope is in Staton, who is for fight.
McClellan informed me positively that in a week or
two, you should be relieved from Cheat Mountain- that
four new Ohio regiments were ordered there – that you should
go to Ky & have all the fighting with traiters you desire –
that the 9th should be in your Brigade-& that Buell
should be specially telegraphed to that affect. I shall write
Gen. Buell to impress this still more on him & to inform
him that you would like an Ind. Brigade though
