You wish me to give you an
account of what I read. I will make my first
effort-I am studying S. G. Goodrich history of France it
give an account as far back as 2500 years ago the first
inhabitants of this fine country probably came from Germany
they had no alphabet or written letters and of course no
books, all we know about them is from the Romans
with whom they were continually at war until they
were finally subdued by Julius Caesar, a Roman general
about sixty years before the birth of our Savior.
Caesar being a skillful general and good scholar made a
history of all he saw in the countries he conquered. What is
now called France was called by the Romans Gallic or Gaul,
they were cheerful light-hearted in manners and habits-they
were little better than our own Indians. They lived by hunting
and fishing, there armies consisted of bows and arrows and
battle ax. Their dress consisted of tight-trousers with
a manlet thrown over their shoulders. The Gaul’s treated
the woman with the greatest honor and respect-they
in consequence were much superior in their character to
the woman of most savage nations. The Gaul’s had no
churches but in the midst of thick forest were erected
huge circles of unknown stones placed upright many of
which are now to be seen. At these the people assembled
and the priests called Druids clothed in white dresses and
crowned with oak leaves offered sacrifices to the one god
