Brig Gen. Milroy:
Sir! During your short stay in this
city, I had the pleasure of an introduction to you and
made myself happy with the others in getting up a little jubilee
for the soldiers of your brave brigade on the Island. On
that occasion, I saw your men carry you in their arms
and kiss your hands and garments. I did not at that
time comprehend the secret charm which called forth such
love and reverence. Now I understand it. It is disclosed
in your order no. It is your disinterested humanity
for poor human nature without respect to complexion.
I thank you General for that order. God will prosper the
Man, the men who rebuke ignorant cruelty and arrogancy
and protect the weak, the humble and down trodden.

it will either humanize or brutalize. You are on
the side, dear General, an ally of the truest and
best, and must win. If our City should again be
honored by your presence, I shall be please to extend to
you the hospitality of my house, as a slight appreciation
