Office A. A. Q. Genl.
Head qrs. 1st Sep. Brigd.
Beverly W. Va. Oct 19th 1863
Dear Major
Yours 28th Sept. directed to
Romney came to hand this day. It has
been a long time on the way. I am very
sorry I could not of had it earlier for
nothing would give me more pleasure
than to hear of Genl. Milroy being restored
to command. i will start the petition
at once and as soon as signed by
the officers will forward to you.
I never had any such idea that Genl.
Milroy was responsible for the disaster
at Winchester. Politicians in authority may
inconvinance the Genl. awhile but they
cannot permanently injure him. He is
trying to put down this rebellion and
these that have known him longest and
known him best are not unmindful of
that fact. His name will be a familiar
household word when many another now
made public by newspapers & reporters shall
have been forgotten. I sincerly hope
