I respectfully ask of the Maj. Genl.
commanding the Department of the Cumberland,
to be transfered to the command of the division
recently commanded by Brig. Genl. Hovy (resigned)
for the following reasons.
1st My present command of the 8000 men is
scattered along at proper points between Nashville
&, Look out Creek, 154 miles, & is disposed
under three experienced & competent Brigade
commanders to wit, Brig. Genl. Paine, Brig, Genl.
Van Cleve, & Col. Krizynowski, who are each
perfectly familiar with the duties required of them, &
well acquainted with the country along the line
of their respective commands, and have the
defence of the R.R. as well arranged as the
forces under their respective commands will
admit of.
So that my supervision over them
is but little needed, & my duties could be discharged
by an Inspector General
