                  I take the liberty 
of droping you a short note this A.M. to let 
you know I have been put in the office here 
as you will see by above. 
 
 
 
I am happy to say that I am spotting those 
inferal rebel devil friends of yours & mine 
at Winchester, and send every scoundrel 
of them back to their homes, to get their state 
rights with a flea in their ears. 
 
 
 
The Colonel Comdg has interfered in one case 
only, and I have written the Secy of War about 
it.  It was a Miss Sherread of Winchester who 
came here with a trunk full of goods not 
permitted by the Custom House officer at Balto. 
and she refused to take the oath – but the 
Colonel Comdg passed her out, bag & baggage. 
 
 
 
               I am allowed to control the 
passes exclusively, (but did not in the case above named as 
you see) and if I dont give these Hellish fiends 
up there about Winchester, a good scoreing, it 
will not be my fault. 
 
 
 
I see by the papers, that the hounds have missed their 
prey on you, and am rejoiced to hear it, & 
for Gods sake come here and help these troops 
to do their duty well.  They are unanimously 
in favor of your returning to this Command, and 
will send up such a shout the  as you never heard 
before, should you come.  Should be glad to hear 
from you if you see proper to write.
