This is Christmas
Evening, my third Christmas away from
home & I devoutly hope it will be my last
away from my dear family. The last letter
I recd. from you was of the 7th inst. I fear
you do nor keep your promise to write me
once a week. If you do, the mails are
very irregular. Congress has adjoined for
the holidays & most of the members have
gone home & I have not yet been ordered to duty.
The Union members of the Ind. Delegation to
Congress called on the President in a body in
my behalf on Saturday last. Old Abe recd.
them kindly & expressed much friendship for
me & desire to see me on duty & after much
talk he drew up a strong telegram to Gen Grant
desiring him if possible to give me a command
but I have not heard of it yet. The members from
Va. & other states will call on him as soon as
Congress meets a gain & Old Abe will have to
assume responsibility to order me a command
or loose many friends. I may have to wait a
few weeks but feel pretty sure I will get a Comd.
