My Dear Wife & Daughter.
Your joint letter
of the 13 & 17 inst. was recd. on Saturday
evening last & afforded me a rich treat.
I am very much pleased to see how well
Ella is learning to write & how fast she is
improving. Keep on trying Ella, you
will be a good writer if you keep on
practicing & be able to write a whole sheet
of four pages easier than you now write
one page. The more you write the easier it
will be to you. You ought therefore to write a
letter or composition every day, if it is only a
few lines, and when you get a few years older
I want you to try to write poetry & be able to
write books when you get to be a woman.
But be sure to learn to read well & remember
what you read. You ought to talk about what
you read to some one. this will impress it
on your mind & make you a wise sensible
girl. If I find that you are a smart girl
& a good girl & that you will try to make good
use of your time & improve your mind all you
can, I will buy you a fine piano & send you to
a female College & give you a splendid education
& make an accomplished lady of you
Handwritten; 4 pages, double folded, on white stationery, light blue lines
