Camp of the 8th Regt Penna Vols
New Creek, Va., Nov 26th 1862
Dear General:-
Learning with regret that a paper
numerously signed is in circulation among
my comrades in Arms of the 8th Regt P.V.
petitioning their removal from the Brigade
under command of Brig. Gen Cluseret
and be assigned to duty under command
of Col. Mulligan and being averse
to said change (although largely in the
minority) I can not help but remonstrate
against the granting of the desires of
said petitioners. My sense of the duties
incumbent upon the American soldier
constrain me to this course of action.
My remonstrance is based on the
following reasons:
1st. In this crisis of our nations peril
it is not proper that the soldier should
become a chooser of his positions
