My Dear Mary 
 
 
      I wrote to you two days ago very fully 
about matters here and only write now to introduce you 
to my Military Clerk F. A. Welton, who has been with 
me since the beginning of the last or rather present cam 
paign and is a soldier of the 9th Ind. and goes home now 
because he has been in bad health and to take my horse 
Jasper home.  “Alf” (as we call our clerk) is a most 
excellent boy and will tell you about matters here.  He 
will return again in a few weeks.  I also send you by 
Alf  $329.--($200 in treasury notes & $129, in a draft on 
N. York) Thompson will pay you the cash for the draft— 
it is payable to you and you must endorse by writing your name 
across the back of it when you take it to Thompson. I also 
send you a box of Sundrey surplus  old clothes & other things 
that I do not need—some books-a ring-sugar-photograph 
etc. & etc.—But my dear Jasper is the most important 
item I send you.  I think he may recover from his wounds 
I commend him especially to Ben’s care & I know that he will attend 
him right—His shoes had better be taken off & he kept out 
in pasture till he gets well—He will make a splendid buggy 
horse for a man to drive—but I fear he will be too fiery and & playful
